Kate's Story

Teacher Kate Mcgwre has raised more than £1000 for Neurocare after undergoing a life saving operation on her brain.

Kate aged 31, from Chesterfield, was diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumour in 2003 and was operated on at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

She has raised more than £1,000 for Neurocare by taking part in one of the sponsored sky dives that Neurocare organize all year round. Having done this and conquered her fears Kate then urged people across Sheffield to take off their shoes and socks and take part in our sponsored firewalk.

Kate says; “When I was diagnosed with a brain tumour I was in a complete state of shock. It was really hard to take in as I was still in my twenties and thought that those were the kinds of things that only happened to someone else, not me.

“But the care I received at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital was brilliant. That’s what made me want to do some fundraising for Neurocare when I got well again.

“I also work as a teacher at Silverdale School and having had six months off work to recover following my operation, all the kids were really keen to support me in some fundraising once I got better.”

But on the day of the sky dive Kate was called back into the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

“It was a bizarre coincidence. On the very same day as my sky dive for Neurocare, the hospital rang me and said that following further tests I still needed further treatment as the surgeon hadn’t been able to remove all of the tumour.

“I’m currently undergoing radio surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, but am really keen to carry on fundraising for the doctors and nurses at the hospital who have worked so hard to save my life.

Kate had a great time taking part in the Firewalk and along with 34 others raised a wonderful amount for the charity. Kate was supported by her students who cheered her along the hot coals holding banners they had made specially for the occasion.

Kate continues her radiosurgery treatment on N floor at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Neurocare wish her every health and happiness for the future.
